Imagine that you have been given the opportunity to advise the government to spend more money on ONE thing to promote the prosperity of a poor and less-populated rural area. Which ONE of these do you believe would be the most beneficial for the region? Why?
- provide direct finance to small farmers
- encourage the development of new forms of business and industry
- do nothing because this is a natural development
Inevitably, there is growing concern over the increasing number of people who was born in rural areas leaving their hometown for large cities. Although it is fully convinced that the government should provide peasant farmers with certain financial supports or even not intervene in the situation, from my perspective, the best way to address the concern is that the government develops the manufacturing or commercial industry by encouraging people living in remote rural areas to generate innovative ideas.
First of all, it is universally acknowledged that the government that encourages innovation in rural industries are capable of dramatically ensuring a major boost to the local economy. Obviously, the main reason is that when the government encourages the local businesses to follow an innovative pattern of development, local people can take full advantage of the government’s support to embrace some modern methods, such as using a range of automatic devices which allow the mass production, meaning that long-term profits can be guaranteed. Therefore, based on some innovative practices in local industries, rural areas can definitely achieve the goal of becoming prosperous. However, once the government merely offers some short-term financial supports or even does nothing, the underdeveloped region will lose a valuable opportunity to stimulate its economy, due to the fact that a radical change in economy is always accompanied by innovation. The story happening to my hometown could perfectly prove the statement mentioned above. My hometown was a poor fishing village before the government implemented a policy for encouraging a wide range of innovative ways to boost the economy. To be more specific, plenty of small businesses in my hometown adopted new methods to produce and sell their products, such as using modern technologies to freeze fish and setting up online shops, contributing to a significant improvement in the sales figures. Consequently, the fishing economy thrived in my hometown thanks to the encouragement given by the government of innovating new ideas. However, the government in my friend’s village only provided some financial support to every villager, leading to the fact that the problem that the village was increasingly backward could not be solved effectively. Thus, the economy in rural areas can be boosted by the government encouraging innovation in local industries.
In addition, it is undoubted that the government supporting innovative practices in local commercial industries can considerably guarantee that a large number of tourists can be attracted to the areas. Apparently, the primary reason is that when local people have chances to make use of some innovative ideas to present the features of the village to people around the country, many people in other areas may be attracted and be willing to go on a trip to the village, which means that the tourism industry will be developed. Hence, benefited from some innovative ideas supported by the government, tourism can be a major source of income for many rural areas. However, once the government doesn’t emphasize the importance of innovation, these areas will relatively lose a valuable chance to develop their tourism by attracting plenty of tourists. Take my friend’s hometown as an example. The government in her village implemented a policy that businesses that generated new ideas to successfully boost tourism could be granted a large amount of money. Consequently, several activities about experiencing life in the village were devised and the relevant information was released online so that many people were attracted to the small fishing village, making great contribution to the local economic growth. However, the government in my mother’s hometown didn’t adopt the policy on encouraging innovation, resulting to the fact that the small village was hardly found by people living in other areas, though the village had breathtaking scenery. Thus, the government should encourage innovative ideas in local industries since it can have a positive effective on the tourism industry.
To put everything in a nutshell, encouraging industrial innovation in remote rural areas is the best way for the government to deal with the issue of poverty because it can not only effectively boost the local economy in the long run but also guarantee the development of local tourism.
